1. I've been in here. -> in 은 여기서 절대 No!

 

2. I have been here two and half years. ->s가 안들린다 하나 대부분 year로 발음하기 쉽다.

 

3. I'm gonna = I'm going to -> gonna 는 뉴욕에서 가장 많이 쓰이지만, 인터뷰 등에서 사용했다간 큰일. 조심할것.

 

4. in college,

   in graduate school,

   at a university -> 보통 학교 이름을 댐 at NYU university

 

5. 화제를 바꿉시다

   = Please jump to another = Please switch to another

   = Please change the subject

   = Please skip that topic.

 

   # Jump (right) in = Join in without waiting

 

6. Introduce yourself briefly. 소개를 짧게 해주세요.

 

7. Please wait - I'll be there shortly. (presently or soon)

 

8. How long have you taught? ≒ How long have you been teaching?

 

9. try to solve the problem -> 문제를 풀려 노력하다.

 

10. discuss it with others

     = confer with others

     = consult ohters

 

11. with my colleagues (co-workers)

    

12. a dog-eat-dog world -> dog-eat-dog 인정사정 없는, 치열하게 다투는

 

13. I've tried to fix it 와 I tried to fix it 의 차이

     -> 전자는 말할 시점까지 고치려 노력했다는 것이고 후자는 노력했지만 이젠 포기했다란 의미로 구분해야 함.

 

14. I am working on it. -> 대답할때, 어떤 일에 대해 "처리하고 있다. 노력하고 있다."라고 말할때 사용.

 

15. I never interfere with my work. -> 인터뷰할때, "전 제일을 절대 그르치지 않을 거에요."라고 말하면 만점 :)

     interfere: 방해하다, 충돌하다, 해치다, 간섭하다.

 

16. a & an

     an umbrella, an uncle, an unusual day <- u가 모두 "언"으로 단모음으로 발음되었다.

     a usual day, a unicorn, a united workforce <- 모두 "유"로 이중모음으로 발음되었다.

 

     # a herb, a hair, an heir

19. Of course <- 몇몇 미국인들에게 무시당한단 느낌을 줄수 있다.

     부드러운 표현에 대해 알아보자.

      Yes, Indeed. (영국에서 종종 쓰이며, 미국에서 너무 오래된 느낌)

      Absolutely!

      You('ve) got that right.

 

      Informal -  Strong agreement: I hear that = I hear you.

 

20. I don't want her to be disappointed = I don't want to disappoint her. 말하면서 실수하기 쉬운 문장.

 

21. You went too far = That's going too far! 너 오버했어. 좀 심한데?

 

22. F*cking > freaking > frigging -> freaking or frigging 은 좀 순한 편이라고 한다. (euphemism 완곡어법)

     Damn it! > Darn it
