한 독일인의 글 An article on a German website

이 이야기는 한 독일인의 홈페이지에 있던 글을 일

본인을 원숭이라 표현했다고 어떤 일본인 유학생이  일본의 어느 게시판에 올렸는데, 그후 그 독일인 사이트를 해킹한 것은 물론 일본 우익들로부터 테러에 가까운 협박은 받자 결국 한국에도 알려지게 된 글입니다. 자 지금부터 그 글이 어떤 내용이길래 그랬던 건지 살펴보죠.

■ "당신은 감동적인 이야기를 좋아하는가? 

이 이야기를 이해하기 위해 먼저 지도를 펴기 바란다. 아마 당신이 알고 있을 중국과 일본 사이에 한반도가 있고 그 곳에 한국이라는 나라가 보일 것이다. 이야기는 이 조그만 나라의 어느 마라토너가 중심에 있다.

이 나라는 지도에서 보이는 바와 같이 중국과 일본이라는 두 무력에 의존하는 나라 사이에서 놀랍게도 2000 년간 한번도 자주성을 잃어본 적이 없는 기적에 가까운 나라이다. 그리고 이럴 경우 이 한국인들은 나라 대신에 '민족'이라는 표현을 쓰기를 좋아한다.

어느 여름 날 우연히 본 한장의 사진 때문에 나는 이 나라 , 아니 이 민족의 굉장한 이야기에 빠져 들고 말았다. 1936 년 히틀러 통치 시절 , 베를린에서 올림픽이 열렸고 그때 두 일본인이 1위와 3위를 차지하였다. 2위는 영국인이었다.

헌데 시상대에 올라간 이 두 일본인 승리자들의 표정... 이것은 인간이 표현할 수 있는 가장 슬픈 모습을 하고 있는 것이 아닌가.. 이 불가사의한 사진.... 무엇이 이 두 승리자들을 이런 슬픈모습으로 시상대에 서게 했는가?

과거도 , 그리고 현재도 가장 인간적인 유교라는 종교가 지배하는 이 나라 아니 이 민족은 이웃한 일본인 (죽음을 찬미하고 성에 탐닉하는) 에 대해 ' 영리한 원숭이' 에 불과하다는 가치관을 가지고 있으며 불행히도 이 인간적인 품위를 중시하는 자부심 강한 민족이 이 원숭이들에게 '강간' 이라고 표현할 수밖에 없는 침략, 즉 식민지로 떨어지고 말면서 이야기는 시작된다.

당시 대부분의 불행한 식민지의 청년들은 깊은 고뇌와 번민에 개인의 이상을 희생하고 말았고, '손' 과 '남' 이라고 하는 두 청년들 역시 예외일 수는 없었다. 이 두 청년들은 달림으로써 아마도 자신들의 울분을 표출해야만 했는지도 모른다.

이 두 청년들은 많은 일본인 경쟁자들을 물리치고

마침내 올림픽에 출전할 수 있었을 것이다. 그리고 달렸을 것이다. 달리는 내내 이 두 청년들은 무엇을 생각했을까... 그들은 승리했고 시상대에 오를 수 있었지만 그들의 가슴에는 조국 한국의 태극기 (이 국기는 대부분의 나라의 그것이 혁명이라든가 투쟁이라든가 승리 또는 위대한 황제의 문양인데 비해 우주와 인간과 세상 모든 것의 질서와 조화를 의미한다) 대신에 핏빛 동그라미의 일장기가 있었고 , 스탠드에 역시 이 핏빛 일장기가 올라가고 있었다.

이때 이 두 청년의 표정이란.... 그들은 깊게 고개를 숙인 채 .... 한 없이 부끄럽고 슬픈 얼굴을 어느 누구에게도 보이고 싶지 않았을 것이다. 

그리고 이 뉴스를 전한 일본 검열하의 한국 신문 the Eastasia times(동아일보를 지칭하는 듯)는 이 사진 속의 일장기를 지워버리고 만다. 이 유니크한 저항의 방법...  과연 높은 정신적인 종교 유교의 민족답지 않은가. 그런데 일본 정부는 이 신문사를 폐간시키고 만다. 이 우습고도 단순하면서 무지하기까지 한 탄압의 방법이란...

이야기는 여기서 끝나지 않는다.

마침내 이 민족은 해방되고 강요당한 이데올로기에 의해 무서운 또 한 번의 전쟁을 치른 후, 한강의 기적 (한국인들은 지구상에서 일본 인들을 게을러 보이게 하는 유일한 민족이다) 을 통해 스페인보다도 포르투갈보다도 더 강력한 경제적 부를 이루고 만다. 

그리고는 1988 년 수도 서울에서 올림픽을 개최하는데 이른다. 불과 50년 ... 태극기조차 가슴에 달 수 없었던 이 나라 아니 이 민족이 올림픽을 개최하고 만 것이다. 그리고 개막식, 성화를 들고 경기장에 들어선 작고 여린 소녀 마라토너로부터 성화를 이어받은 사람은 그 날 너무나도 슬프고 부끄러웠던 승리자, "손" (손기정)이었다.

노인이 되어버린 이 슬픈 마라토너는 성화를 손에 든 채 마치 세 살 먹은 어린애와 같이 훨훨 나는 것처럼 즐거워하지 않는가!! 어느 연출가가 지시하지도 않았지만 역사란 이처럼 멋지고도 통쾌한 장면을 보여줄 수 있나 보다.

이 때 한국인 모두가 이 노인에게 , 아니 어쩌면 한국인 개개인이 서로에게 얘기할 수 없었던 빚을 갚을 수 있었다고 한다. 그리고 극적이게도 서울 올림픽 도중에 일본 선수단은 슬픈 소식을 들어야만 했다. 쓰러져 죽음을 기다리는 히로히토 일왕의 소식....

한국인들의 종교 유교는 인간, 심지어는 죽은 조상에게까지 예를 나타내는 종교이다. 이 종교의 보이지 않는 신이 인류 역사상 (예수나 석가도 해내지 못한) 기적을 일으킨 것이다.

나는 이 이야기가 여기서 끝이기를 바랬다. 이처럼 굉장한 이야기가 이대로 보존되기를 바랬기 때문이다. 그런데 한국인들은 이해할 수 없는 집념과 끈기, 그리고 폭력과 같은 단순함이 아닌 놀라운 정신력으로 그들이 50년 전 잃어버렸던 금메달을 되찾고 만 것이다.

서울올림픽이 끝나고 4년 후 바르셀로나 올림픽

마라톤에서 '황'이라고 하는 '손' 노인과 너무나 흡사한 외모의 젊은 마라토너가 몬주익 언덕에서

일본과 독일의 선수들을 따돌리고, 마침내 더 이상 슬프지 않은, 축제의 월계관을 따내고 만 것이다. 

경기장에 태극기가 올라가자 이 '황' 은 기쁨의 눈물과 함께 왼쪽 가슴에 달린 태극기에 경의를 표한다. 그리고는 스탠드로 달려가 비극의 마라토너 '손' 에게 자신의 금메달을 선사하곤 깊은 예의로서 존경을 표한다... '황' 을 가슴에 포옹한 '손' 은 말이 없다.

나는 이 이야기를 접하고는 인간에 대한 신뢰에 한없이 자랑스러움을 숨길 수 없었다. 인간이란, 이 한국인 아니 이 한국 민족처럼 폭력과 거짓과 다툼이 아니라 천천히 그러나 불굴의 의지로서 자신들의 고통을 해결할 수 있는 것이다.

그럼으로써 그것이 비극적인 눈물로 시작된 역사일지라도 환희와 고귀한 기쁨의 눈물로 마감할 수 있는 것이다. 역사상 어느 민족도 보여주지 못했던 인간과 국가와 민족의 존엄을 이 한국인 아니 한국 민족이 보여주지 않는가.

도서관에 달려가라,

그리고 1936년 베를린 올림픽 마라톤 시상대에 선

두 한국인의 사진을 찾아라... 당신은 그 순간 세상에서 가장 행복한 인간이 될 것이다." ■

이렇게 글은 끝이 납니다.

이제 앞으로 한국의 역사가 왜곡없이 세계에 알려지길 희망합니다.

천한 나라라 생각한 일본에게 35년간 치욕적인 역사를 가졌지만 끝내 이겨낸 한국인..많은 위기가 있었지만 끝내 이겨낸 한국인..

말싸움 잘 해도 결국 똘똘 뭉쳐 뭐든 극복해서 전진하는 한국인..기적의 나라..감동의 나라의 한 사람임을 자랑스럽게 생각합시다.

who read an article on a German website

calling Japanese people monkeys. After this,

the owner of the website got a threat from

Japanese rightists and his website was

hacked. Finally, this article spread to Korea.

Let's look at what the article said.

 

■ "Do you like inspirational stories?

To better understand this, look at a map first.

Maybe, you can see the Korean peninsula

between China and Japan.

This story is about one marathoner of a small

country of Korea.

  

This country is between two powerful nations

as you can see on the map, but it didn't lose

its autonomy for 2000 years surprisingly.

It was like a miracle. In this case, Koreans like

to use the term Korean people rather than

Korea.

 

One summer day, I was drawn to an amazing

story about Korean people, through a picture I

saw by chance. In the 1936 Berlin Olympics,

during Hitler's reign, two Japanese

marathoners won first and third and second

place was taken by an Englishman.

  

However, the expression on the faces of the

two Japanese marathoners were as sad as

could be. How mysterious this picture was!

Why did they have such sad expressions on

their face when receiving awards?

 

The Korean people, who have been strongly

affected by Confucianism from the past to the

present had thought Japanese people were

like smart monkeys because they praised

 death (Samurai) and were addicted to sex.

However, this story was started after Korean

people, who had a pride of which they

emphasized humanitarian dignity, became the

colony of Japan for 35 years by invasion,

which was like being raped by monkeys.

  

At that time, most young people who were

living miserably in colonized Korea gave up

their ideals with suffering and agony and that

was no exception for two men; Mr. Son and

Mr. Nam. These guys might have expressed

their resentment through the marathon.

 

They finally got the opportunity to participate in

the Olympic Games after defeating many

Japanese competitors. And they ran. What did

they think while they were running? They won

first and third and stood on the honor platform,

but they had to wear uniforms with the bloody

round Japanese flag, not the Korean flag

(most flags symbolize  fighting or victory, but

the Korean flag symbolizes harmony and oder

of all things in the world and humanity and the

universe.). Moreover, they had to see the

bloody Japanese flag going up the flagpole.

 

The expressions on their faces as they

received their medals... They could not raise

their head and did not want others to see their

sad and shameful faces. And the Eastasia

Times in Korea, which was under

the censorship of Japan, erased the

Japanese flag in the picture. What a unique

method of resistance! However, Japan closed

down the Eastasia Times soon afterwards.

How ridiculous, simplistic and ignorant the

suppression was!

  

This is not the end of the story.

 

Finally, Korean people were liberated and had

to undergo one more war, the Korean war, as

a struggle between two ideas;  democracy

and communism, and they attained greater

economic power than Spain or Portugal,

through what is called the miracle of Han

river. (Only Korean people make the

Japanese look lazy.)

 

Furthermore, in 1988, the Olympic Games

were held in Seoul, the Korean capital. They

couldn't wear uniforms with the Korean flag

just about 50 years ago, but they finally held

the Olympics in their capital city. In the

opening ceremony, a little girl handed over

the sacred fire to Mr. Son, the winner of

sadness and shame.

 

This marathoner, who had became a senior,

was running with the happiest face like 3 year

old child. Nobody directed it, but history made

this wonderful, great scene.

 

At that time, he was paying back the debt he

and Korean people couldn't talk about even

to each other. Dramatically Japanese people

had to get the sad news of their king Hirohito's

death.

 

Korea's main religion, Confucianism, says to

respect humanity and even dead ancestors.

Confucianism's invisible deity brought about

this miracle which even Jesus and Budha

couldn't do.

 

I hoped this story would end here because I

wanted to keep this amazing story as it is.

However, the Koeans recovered the Gold

medal lost 50 years ago with mental power,

concentration and patience, not with simple

violence.

 

4 years later the Seoul Olympics, during the

Barcelona Olympics, Mr. Hwang, who

resembed Mr. Son, passed Japanese and

German marathoners to win a laurels, which

was not sad anymore. He cried with joy and

saw the Korean flag go up the flagpole. And

he gave his gold medal to Mr. Son as a sign

of respect. Mr. Son hugged Mr.Hwang without

any words.

 

After I heard about this, I was so proud that I

could feel faith in humanity. Human beings,

specially Korean people, could solve their

suffering with a will of iron, not with violence,

lies and fighting.

 

Indeed, it started as a terrible part of history,

but it ended with tears of joy, happiness and

dignity. Korean people showed human dignity

greater than any other people.

  

Please go to the library and find the picture of

the two men in the honor platform, then, you

can be the happiest person in the world as

soon as you see it." ■

From now on, I hope Korean history cannot

be distorted by Chinese and Japanese

historians, even by politicians.

 

Koreans went through 35 years of oppression

under Japan, went through many crises, but

in the end were victorious.

 

Even if they argue a lot, in the end Koreans

overcome their differences and move forward.

It's a miraculous nation... Let's be proud that

we are Koreans.
